About being a Christian...
It may surprise you to know that being a Christian does not depend on how good you live your life, or how nice you are to people, or how much money you give to charities or how many good things you do. You cannot get into heaven just by being a good person... You cannot ever do enough to buy your salvation. Anyone... everyone can become a Christian. No one is too bad, or too good. This is great news and a huge relief, right??
So how does one become a Christian?
Let's look at a few important points first...
What is a Christian?
A Christian is is a Christ-follower, someone who believes in the saving grace of Jesus Christ, and commits to live their life in service to God.
God loves you more than our hearts understand
God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. ~John 3:16
God has a plan for your life
God knows you personally and He knows every thought you think. He has chosen a lifepath for you, and the details are in the Bible.
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." ~Psalm 139:13-16
God wants you to live with Him forever
"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me." ~Revelation 3:20
How to become a Christ-follower?
- Admit you are a sinner. The Bible says: "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" ~Romans 3:23. No one is good enough to go to Heaven on their own merit, no matter how much good we do, we still come short.
- Realize the penalty for sin. The Bible says: "For the wages of sin is death, " ~Romans 6:23a. Just as there are wages for good, there is punishment for wrong, The penalty for our sin is eternal death in Hell, an indescribably horrible place.
- Believe that Jesus Christ died, was buried, and rose again for you. The Bible says: "If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." ~Romans 10:9
- Trust Christ alone as your Savior. The Bible says: "but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." ~Romans 6:23b. Also "for, 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'" ~Romans 10:13. Eternal life is a gift purchased by the blood of Jesus and offered freely to those who call upon Him by faith. Anyone who believes on the Lord Jesus Christ will be part of God's family and will spend eternity with Him.
